Department of Clinical and Biomedical Sciences hosts inaugural Reproducible and Sustainable Research Computing Day

Researchers from across the University of Exeter came together on 14th July for the inaugural Reproducible and Sustainable Research Computing Day. The collaborative event, organised by NIHR BRC PhD student Michaelis Vasiliadis, focused on improving the quality, transparency and environmental sustainability of computational research.
Hosted at the Research, Innovation, Learning and Development (RILD) Building, the event welcomed researchers, data stewards, research software specialists and bioinformaticians from across the University to share best practice in reproducible and FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) research computing.
The programme featured talks from experts across Exeter, covering topics including statistical genetics, data stewardship, bioinformatics, clinical diabetes research and digital research infrastructure. Delegates also heard from guest speaker Dr Loïc Lannelongue (University of Cambridge), founder of the GreenDiSC sustainable computing certification scheme, who shared insights into reducing the environmental impact of computational research and highlighted emerging sustainable computing initiatives across UK universities.
The event provided an opportunity for attendees to exchange ideas on how researchers can adopt simple, practical approaches that improve the reproducibility of their work while reducing its environmental footprint. A key outcome of the day was recognising that practical guidance and signposting to support and resources are more valuable than a single set of principles, helping to keep reproducible and sustainable research at the forefront of everyday research practice.
