How we are funded
Functional genomics research across the UK
The Medical Research Council (MRC), in collaboration with the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), awarded £28.5 million in funding to establish a UK Human Functional Genomics Initiative.
The funding supports functional genomics research across the UK, and contributes to the establishment of the Functional Genomics Screening Laboratory at The Milner Therapeutics Institute.
The Initiative aims to advance our understanding of how genetic variation influences human physiology and disease.
Professor Jonathan Mill from the University of Exeter Medical School leads the Initiative as its Director.
Funding
A £4.6 million Director’s award includes funding for:
- establishing a functional genomics data coordination centre
- collaboration across the interdisciplinary research clusters and external partners working in emerging areas of functional genomics research
£7 million from UKRI Medical Research Council (MRC) is helping establish a new functional genomics screening laboratory at the Milner Therapeutics Institute (MTI) in collaboration with AstraZeneca and the University of Cambridge.
£16.9 million from UKRI Medical Research Council (MRC) and UKRI Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) is supporting four research clusters in functional genomics.
This is an exciting time for UK functional genomics research. With MRC’s support the convergence of recent advances in gene-editing technology, artificial intelligence, and other technologies will allow us to answer research questions in ways that would have previously been impossible. The UK Human Functional Genomics Initiative is key to advancing the UKRI’s strategic priority to securing better health, ageing, and wellbeing.”MRC Executive Chair, Professor Patrick Chinnery
