Leading Researchers Convene in London to Advance Collaboration in Mental Health and Functional Genomics

Advancing understanding of the genomic basis of mental illness is a major scientific and clinical priority, requiring closer integration between large-scale genetic discovery and functional genomics. A recent one-day workshop in London brought together experts from across the mental health and functional genomics research communities to help drive this agenda forward.

Jointly convened by the Mental Health Platform and the UK Human Functional Genomics Initiative, the event, on 11 March, highlighted the growing convergence between psychiatric genetics and cutting-edge functional genomics technologies. With significant investment from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) driving progress in both fields, the workshop provided a timely opportunity to strengthen collaboration and align with the Medical Research Council’s (MRC) strategic priorities.

The programme featured presentations from leading researchers, showcasing emerging and cross-cutting developments, alongside dedicated sessions for open discussion and input from industry, the MRC and Wellcome. Participants explored future scientific directions and identified opportunities for joint activity to accelerate discovery and translation.

“We are excited by the level of engagement and the shared commitment to collaboration demonstrated throughout the day,” said Professor Mill. “Bringing these communities together is critical to advancing our understanding of the genomic and molecular mechanisms underlying mental illness and ultimately translating these insights into meaningful clinical impact.”

The workshop marks an important step toward deeper integration across disciplines, with momentum building for continued partnership and innovation.
