Akira is a plastic surgeon who studies nerve compression and nerve injury, and his goal is to develop drug therapies for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). CTS is one of the four diseases that are studied in the Musculoskeletal Cluster. The group will use functional genomics to identify therapeutic targets, develop ex vivo model systems that allow drug testing against those targets, with the ultimate aim of translating this work into a human study of drug therapy in CTS patients.
