UK Human Functional Genomics Initiative Secures Funding to Expand AI Training for Researchers

The UK Human Functional Genomics Initiative has been awarded funding from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to launch a new training programme that will equip early career researchers, PhD students, and technical staff with vital artificial intelligence and machine learning skills.

The Initiative, a national network of more than 1,000 academics alongside NHS, charity, and industry partners, is at the forefront of data-driven genomics research. As genomic datasets grow more complex, demand for AI expertise has surged — yet access to training remains limited, particularly for those at the start of their careers.

Delivered in partnership with training provider Learn to Discover, the programme will involve an online foundational course in Python and data handling, followed by an intensive two-day workshop on AI applications in functional genomics. A follow-up online event and integration into the Initiative’s annual symposium will sustain learning and collaboration.

Dr Craig Willis, Senior Data Lead of the Data Coordination Centre for the Initiative, said:
“This investment ensures that the next generation of scientists has the skills and confidence to apply AI responsibly and effectively, accelerating discoveries that will benefit both biology and medicine.”

By democratising access to AI training and fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration, the Initiative aims to build a sustainable UK-wide community of practice, strengthening the nation’s position at the cutting edge of genomics research.
